John,
Have you had any luck getting OO 2.0 beta (1.9.79.2) installed? I
installed it right from synaptic after adding the backports repository
to my /etc/apt/sources.list. Here is a copy of mine in case it helps:
deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 5.04 _Hoary Hedgehog_ - Release i386 (20050407)]/
hoary main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary main restricted
## Major bug fix updates produced after the final release of the
## distribution.
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-updates main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-updates main

## repository.

The backports repo gives some nice updates. I have the OO beta and gaim
1.3.1. Both from the comfort of synaptic. Yes, I do know how to use the
CL - but that sure is not the easiest way anymore.
HTH,
Reid
