[PLUG] Haunted

OK, I'm having trouble with evil spirits or ghosts or something.

First, I'm happily wasting time on the Internet worrying about things
that I can do absolutely nothing about, when I get a hard freeze. I
mean I'm sitting there looking at Firefox with a text cursor in the
middle of the page and the mouse will not move. Nada, keyboard. I mean
Control-Alt-Backspace, NOTHING.

So I press the power button for the mandatory eight count, after which I
reboot, check the file system which seems to proceed OK, only instead of
proceeding to boot, it backs up and goes to the GRUB splash screen
wherein I select the default kernel and try again. I elect to check the
file system again and this time it goes to boot. Relief!

Boy am I relieved because when all this other stuff was happening, I was
thinking disk crash, board crash, memory crash. And OK, next time
nothing but real Intel boards, no more no name boards from across the
seas.

So, the Gnome desktop comes up, evolution is open, hoo boy I survived.
But wait, something is different on the desktop, it's not there. The
default Fedora background is not there, neither are any folders or other
icons, the trashcan etc. I right click on the desktop, _nothing_.
Argh! So, I open up the main menu, select system tools::system-logs,
give my password, and NOTHING, no response. This can't be happening, I
do it again, and up pops the window. I look at the boot log, nothing
that means anything to me. While looking at the kernel log, all the
icons suddenly appear on my desktop. Hnnh?

How is this possible? Was I in some sort of time loop? What?
