You mean it behaves for X or that starting X causes it to behave for 
gpm?  IIRC, you can tell X to use gpmdata or some-such (sorry, not the 
reverse.)

Tried switching mice?  If the well-behaved one works okay on this 
machine, it's definitely a "this machine" problem.  Are they both 
running the same distro/versions?  Maybe something going nuts with 
interrupts (disable other hardware/drivers/X.)
