I'll second the nomination of LyX, although I prefer TeXmacs for "literate programming", since it allows embedded sessions of Maxima, Octave, etc. Both are GUI wrappers on LaTeX and both allow access to the underlying LaTeX if you need it. LyX is somewhat easier to use, but TeXmacs is more powerful. >
