That's a real good question. Are you using a journaling filesystem, like
ext3, reiser, etc.? If the last thing that happened is you shut down and
left town, perhaps it wasn't a clean shutdown? Did it fsck when it came
up?

Assuming that the box was really not touched while you were away, it's
hard to think of much else causing the multiple problems you mentioned.
This will probably remain one of those unsolved mysteries :)
