John,

   From within a virtual terminal, what do you see when you run 'lsmod' (list
modules) as root? The commands to load a module into the kernel are insmod
(the simpler of the two) and modprobe.

   You can try loading the appropriate driver (for XFree86 or X.org) manually
and see what your display does. When you confirm that it works, you can add
the driver to the same location as other loaded drivers and tell SuSE/Mandr*
to load them by putting the driver path and name where all loaded modules
are specified. (I've no idea where that is on your distributions, but in
Slackware it's /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.)
