Yup, you need to 'mkinitrd...' with the proper options.

On my system, if I just run mkinitrd without any options, it gives me a
command line example for the currently running kernel, and that's easy
enough to go by to figure it out.

After making the initrd, add it to your grub stanza for that kernel.
