NetWare is not needed to use IPX.  IPX can be configured to work in all 4 Ethernet frame types, just make sure you set the same frame type on all systems in the network for a specific logical network.  If you want multiple logical networks on the same physical network, you can use the different frame formats to define separate logical networks.

IPV6 works much like IPX with regard to automatic node/host addressing. Not sure Warcraft will work with that though.

For fun I've thought about using IPX in Linux.  Also, Warcraft II works
over it.  Why use IPX instead of IP?  Is Netware needed?  What frame
type do I use?  Can more than one frame type be used on the same
media?  Has anyone thought of developing an open source alternative
to IPX to simplify setting up private networks?  Has Novell changed
it's mind at all about releasing NDS under an open source license?
