One technique I've heard that works as a sysadmin is to have a stuffed
bear outside your cube.  When someone comes up with a problem, they're
required to explain the entire problem/question to the bear before
they can interrupt you.  Often, the act of telling the bear is enough.

Maybe every mailing list subscriber should get a bear for their home
office. :)
