[PLUG] Speeding up Samba server over long VPN tunnel

A friend has a Samba file server in Tacoma, and remote client machines
in New York, some of which are Windoze. Opening a 1M Word file on a
New York machine takes 3 minutes - obviously far too much talking back
and forth.
Is there some sort of caching mechanism that can speed this up? Ping
time between the machines is <200msec, and it is possible to set up a
local Linux/Samba server in New York (remotely administered from Tacoma).
