[PLUG] Morning Slugishness

Does Linux have output in proc providing the average amount of memory
that the system needs? Why not increase the physical ram till
you have more than that amount and disable swap completely? I am
concerned, as I'm certain many are, that swapping destroys hard drives.
If what is swapped does not need to persist after a reboot, how about
an ide drive that allows you to use normal memory sticks or a pci
memory card for swapping? I hear you can get a battery backed up ram
card that plugs into, I guess, the ide bus. Theoretically, if swap
memory is fast enough, swapping is not a big deal. Evem if you need
2 gigs of swap, it's feasible to buy that much ram. Will Linux use
swap even if it isn't out of ram?

Curious,
