That's rediculous.  It should work as he has it set up.  Off the cuff it 
sounds like a shady network driver, or at least a network issue on the 
Windows side.  But really it could be anything, even just a random anomaly.

Just because something is portable doesn't mean it must always be. 
Actually your idea sounds rather inconvenient in a modern world.
