If I were him, and I had gigs of data to transfer like that once in a
while then no (assuming his older Win2K machine uses a 100Mb
connection). It's more convenient to get the transfer done faster. But
moving things back and forth frequently, if that's the case, then yes.
Even if they were 1ft apart. It would be better to invest in Gb
ethernet then and put the bottleneck back on the USB.
On a side note, I have never had one but I've read a Firewire device can
be shared via a Firewire hub. Both machines would see the device as
natively attached. You would retain almost as much portability and gain
transfer speed over a 10/100 network.
