[PLUG] Drive partitioning

This is probably considered a basic question, but with 200 GB and larger drives more common than they once were, it arises more often. I get the impression that most Windows users never partition a drive, and most don't even install it themselves.

Logical partitions often serve the needs of Linux users as well as any other kind. My Debian boot partition is a logical partition. I believe you can have only one extended partition per physical IDE drive. How many logical partitions can it contain?

Linux users are often encouraged to subdivide an installation into separate partitions, and of course one might want to try a number of distros. A large hard drive provides enough space for all this, if it is properly managed.
