I so hate touchpads. One of the reasons I bought my Compaq
laptop instead of other brands is that the touchpad has an on-off
switch. On booting the driver is loaded, so if I am away from home
and discover I forgot my mouse at home I can just turn on the
touchpad.

I have a Logitech cordless optical mouse that I got at Fry's. The
receiver has no cord to get in the way. It's just a little stick that you
put into a USB port. Most people think it is a USB memory stick,
because that's what it looks like. Even comes with a little fabric
case to hold the mouse and stick. Loaded with the two AA
batteries it weighs only a few ounces. I just replaced the batteries
for the first time after using it for about six months, but I'm always
careful to use the little switch on the bottom to turn it off when not
using it.
