WAV files support several different audio formats.  Try running the file
command to find out what type of file you have.  For example:

tinman$ file ej22_16.wav
ej22_16.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 22050 Hz
