[PLUG] The GIMP for Mechanical CAD?

Thanks, Carla, for recommending Akkana Pack's book, Beginning GIMP. It's 
opening up the tool for me.

As I'm using it I'm noticing that there are many features that are 
common with mechanical CAD programs I've used. I wonder if anyone's ever 
considered building a mechanical CAD program using the GIMP as a 
starting point. My Google search for GIMP "mechanical cad" turns up lots 
of sites that talk about each, separately. After two pages, I gave up. 
I'll have to go back later and search some more.
