By default, yum points to a random mirror among Fedora's worldwide
repositories. When I've checked, I've been connected to mirrors in NZ,
Germany, and Brazil. While they're working on a "fastestmirror" RPM for
FC6, the best approach for now is to revise the files in
the /etc/yum.repos.d directories to specific nearby mirrors.

I recommend that you modify the baseurl directive to point to nearby
mirrors such as at kernel.org (hosted at OSU) and fedora.cat.pdx.edu.
Comment out the mirrorlist directives. Multiple baseurl directives in
each stanza are allowed.

Thanks,
Mike
