Wait till XFCE 4.4 comes out. It's still lighter than KDE, but I think 
you can prune Gnome to the point where it's competitive with XFCE 4.4. 
Stick with XFCE 4.2 if you want a light "real desktop".

Of course, *I* switched to WindowMaker/GNUStep. :)
