Subject: [PLUG] Cannot Start /usr/sbin/smbd
This is a new one for me: a process that will not start, but gives no
error messages or any other indication of a problem.
We think the inability of my virtual win98 to communicate with the linux
network is a samba problem. Since I cannot get /usr/sbin/smbd to load and
run, that seems reasonable. Here are the details:
1.) Running 'ps ax | grep smbd' returns nothing. Running 'ps ax | grep
nmbd' returns the PID.
2.) Running '/etc/rc.d/rc.samba stop' reports, 'smbd: no process killed'.
Hmmm-m-m. Not good.
3.) Running '/etc/rc.d/rc.samba start' reports, Starting Samba:
/usr/sbin/smbd -D
/usr/sbin/nmbd -D
But, there's no smbd in the process list.
I checked which version of samba was installed, and it was
samba-3.0.20-i486-2 so I upgraded that to samba-3.0.20b-i486-2, the latest
available.
Nothing changed in the above three steps.
When I look at /var/log/messages I see:
Jun 12 08:56:41 salmo smbd[6202]: [2006/06/12 08:56:41, 0]
printing/pcap.c:pcap_cache_reload(149)
Jun 12 08:56:41 salmo smbd[6202]: Unable to open printcap file lpstat for
read!
Jun 12 08:56:41 salmo smbd[6202]: [2006/06/12 08:56:41, 0]
printing/pcap.c:pcap_cache_reload(149)
Jun 12 08:56:41 salmo smbd[6202]: Unable to open printcap file lpstat for
!
What printcap file is smbd seeking and not finding? There's nothing in
/etc/samba related to printing. /etc/printcap has perms 644 and works with
all other apps.
What's to be done?
TIA,
Rich
