The gzip package (at least in debian) comes with all sorts of goodies:
/bin/zdiff
/bin/zgrep
/bin/zforce
/bin/zless
/bin/zmore
/bin/znew
/bin/zcat
/bin/zcmp
/bin/zegrep
/bin/zfgrep

Which operate on compressed, gzip'd, or uncompressed/ungzip'd files.
