[PLUG] Reconfiguring for change of hardware

I recently had to replace the power supply on this machine. The new one
has fewer "regular" connectors, the ones used for hard drives and CD
drives, than the old one. With the old one I had a CD-ROM drive and a
CD-RW drive. It is very rare that I need to read a CD on this machine,
so I just left it disconnected when I put in the new ps.
The OS installation is SuSE 9.1.
I'm having two problems. One may have always been there. I am unable to
open the CD-RW drawer unless the K3B program is running.
The second is that I am unable to point various CD tools at the
recorder; they all want to look at the no-longer-connected CD-ROM drive.
In /dev I have:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2004-10-06 11:16 cdrecorder -> hdd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2004-09-27 17:24 cdrom -> hdc
Would the simplest thing be to replace cdrom with a new link also
pointing to hdd, or is there something more fundamental that I'm missing?
