Seems like an extra step. How could the phone be getting 12V over usb?
The auto adaptor is likely a step-down DC-DC converter.

Plug the cradle into a powered usb hub? If that's too clunky, the wall
wart you want is probably 5V (check the output voltage on your car
charger.) Radio shack has a large selection of tips that are
interchangeable with their wall warts. Believe it or not, the output
voltage is actually much more stable under load on their wall warts
than the ones that get shipped with most gadgets. I guess it's a
better class of wall wart (they are quite a bit larger and than most
and pricey.)
