this is not good - it looks like your codec to play mpeg files does not like plain X11 output. The codes that come with mplayer have quirks and some don't work with xv, some don't work with sdl etc.

You should investigate:

- using -vo xv or -vo sdl to play through a different library/output channel
- downloading and installing the codec pack that adds other codecs
