I do have an old scanner (ancient, actually) connected to my Windows 2000 desktop, but I wanted a new one and one that was 1) portable and 2) completely compatible with Linux. I ended up getting a Canon LiDE 30 and it works perfectly with Xsane and the other Linux scanning utilities. I couldn't be happier.
I'll second the vote for a Canon LiDE 30. Not professional grade, but
perfectly fine for scanning letters, and even photos. It also runs
fully off the USB power, so one less poorly-designed transformer to
find room for on the power strip.
