Pluggers:
I ran across this on another LUG mailing list. I figure that the larger
and more active PLUG might be able to help out.

Subject: [amesfug] still trying to load linux

Hi folks,

I'm still stuck on loading Linux on my new computer, a self-built with an
AS939SLI32-eSATA2 M1695 939 motherboard, an Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8G 939P R
processor, two 250Gb Western Digital SATA2 hard drives which I've set up as
a mirror pair. I've followed the istructions at
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml as carefully as I
know how. When configuring the kernel, I used genkernel so as to include
drivers for as may devices as possible.

While I'm doing the install, everything appears to work. Files appear to be
copied to the hard drive, and I can hear the hard drives working. This
makes me think my hardware is OK. When I get to the very end and reboot,
grub loads (suggesting to me that the hard drives are working after the
reboot) and a bunch of drivers load (suggesting to me that the boot sector
at /dev/sda1 is working). Then I get a series of messages:

>>Activating udev
>>Determining root device...
!!Block device /dev/sda3 is not a valid root device...
!!The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...
boot() ::

If I type "shell" at the prompt, I see:

boot() :: shell

BusyBox v1.00 (2006.05.04-22:57+0000) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/bin/ash: cant access tty; job control turned off
/ #

Typing "help" gets:

/ # help

Built-in commands:
________________
    . : alias bg break cd chdir continue eval exec exit export false
    fg hash help jobs kill let local pwd read readonly return set
    shift times trap true type ulimit umask unalies unset wait

I have discovered that /usr/bin, /sbin, and /bin exist and are on the path,
and the commands I have tried from those directories seem to work.

Patterned after code listing 4 on this page
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=10,
these commands are in my grub.conf:

root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.15-gentoo-r7 root=/dev/ram0
init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/sda3 udev
initrd /boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.15-gentoo-r7

I really feel like I must be very close to a working system. Any
suggestions of what I need to do next?
