Old Man Knoppix might be your best friend once again.  You'd be better
off running a fsck when the root filesystem hasn't been involved in the
bootup.  Booting from a CD is ideal for situations like these.  Plus,
the version of fsck will be newer (if your knoppix disk isn't as old as
your RH7 load).

It's been a looonnng time since I used ext2, but I seem to remember that
you have to pass a switch to get verbose output.
