Thank you for your prompt reply and suggestion.

iptables isn't configured yet (I was looking at configuring that and/or
bridging to solve Problem #2).

In the default install, there are no rules in any of the 3 stock chains and
the default policy for each chain is to ACCEPT.

I went ahead and gave what you suggested a try anyhow, but still no luck.
