Or at least take something with to test the system out first.  A live
CD of some kind, like Knoppix, or in your case just take the Ubuntu
live CD with when you go to make the purchase, and leave the computer
there (taking your money with you) until it works.  There's no greater
incentive to a vendor than money literally walking out the door.
