I've never seen a monitor that was NOT compatible with linux.  You just
want to look up the specs for the monitor and see if it'll do whatever
resolution X refresh rate you want.  Then you need to get the horizontal
and vertical refresh rates for the monitor, and put those figures into
your xorg.conf file.  Has anybody ever had this NOT work for a
particular monitor?

I've certainly seen monitors that can display 1600x1200, but only at
60hz, which is unacceptably flickery.  The specs for the monitor will
plainly indicate this.

I'm no expert on these things, but isn't the interface between the video
card and monitor completely divorced from the interface between the
kernel and video card?  In other words, shouldn't this be a question of
compatibility between a monitor and a video card, with no mention at all
of the OS?
