Have a look at the "grub and fdisk problems mean what?" thread from 
yesterday and the day before.  The problems you're describing seem 
similar, but not by the initial cause.

For some reason it sounds like your partition table keeps getting set to 
values that aren't correct, or the table is getting corrupt.  Since 
you've just re-installed a linux distro which should've written out a 
new partition table and it doesn't boot immediately afterward, I would 
suggest that it could be a problem with your hard disk geometry 
settings.  Check your BIOS settings and make sure that things are set to 
automatically detect geometry and the values look right.  I personally 
know someone who had this problem where everything went smoothly during 
the install but GRUB always failed to boot Linux.  They reinstalled the 
Linux distro about 4 times, always with the same result.  In the end, 
one look at their bios and changing the hard disk detection to auto 
fixed everything.

Also, the linux installer could be choosing bad values somehow.  How old 
is your computer you're installing on?
