So, in sum: something's deeply and weirdly screwed-up with either
Firefox or system libraries that it uses, in a manner that is likely
unique to this one system. It has at least two symptoms, either of
which makes the browser nearly useless to you.

Neither you, nor the tandem intelligence of many of Portland's brightest
Linux experts, have been able to resolve this issue, which has persisted
for quite a while now.

It has consumed many collective hours that could have been spent helping
others, earning one's daily bread, or being with loved ones.

Given all this, I will ask:
1. Have you tried completely removing Firefox, and reinstalling it by
whatever means recommended by the Slackware folks?
2. Have you tried removing Firefox and installing it from a tarball?
3. Have you considered trying e.g. Konqueror?
4. Have you brought your computer to a Linux Clinic so skilled gurus
might poke and prod at it instead of speculating at a distance?
5. Have you considered using a computer that works correctly, instead?
6. Again, may I send you an Ubuntu CD?

Good offences make good neighbors,
  Aaron
