speaking about that, there are several USB-driven remote receivers (Philips, 
ATI) that have in-kernel drivers and act as input devices. Has anyone actually 
found these and (if so) do they get rid of the lirc cruft?

(yes, I've never been able to get lirc working decently with *any* remote, and 
I'm dying for a non-lirc method where the IR is just a native input device)

PS, 599 seems awfully expensive, especially since you're paying for the gfx card 
(sure it's a good one but do you need that for the video display???). I've been 
looking at ich8 onboard's gfx card (oss drivers!) and they're extremely decent 
for video playback. And you can get a core 2 system up for about the same 
money... if you decide to plug in a celeron you can shave 150$ off of the price 
and it would still perform great for mythtv's purposes.

who needs vtx in a tivo anyway?!
