[PLUG] GnuCash

It's that time of year again. :(

Once again I struggle with Quickbooks. I have it running in Windows
2000 under VirtualBox. It is a pain. OK, accounting itself is a pain.
Accounting came with original sin, I think. If only Adam hadn't eaten
that damn apple. If only the software wasn't annoying as well.

I've been googling for the past several hours. Evidently:

1) GnuCash cannot handle inventory. I installed the latest from
Synaptic (Gutsy, x86_64), which is version 2.2.1, October, 2007). I
searched everywhere, but can't find any buttons for inventory. Is it
true? The highly vaunted GnuCash can't handle inventory? You mean I
have to spend an hour with a clipboard walking all over physically
counting how much of each item I have on the shelf? Tell me it isn't so.

2) It can import data from Quicken, but not Quickbooks. My Quickbooks
native format is .qbw and it can export to .iif, whatever that is. Does
anyone know of any way to get data in Quickbooks format into GnuCash?
Does anyone know what .iif is?

Also, are there any small business alternatives besides GnuCash and
QuickBooks?
