Eric,
You write that you downloaded the patch for .20. Did you use it to patch
the .19 source? If not, you can't build a complete kernel from the patch
file.

Why?

Two things. First, try building from the full kernel source instead of a
patched file. Second, while it's been a long time since I saw GRUB rather
than LILO, you should be able to boot into the kernel you used before and --
according to Carla's Most Excellent Book -- you can get a command line to
fix boot problems.
