Followup:

Moto4lin did not install a launch item in the Applications list, so I
decided to do it myself manually. But when I launched it from my new
listing I could not connect to the phone. After much gnashing of teeth
I discovered that I have to launch it as root to see the phone. OK,
good ol' gksudo did the trick.

But then while fiddling with it suddenly moto4lin could not see the
phone. That is, it said it was connected, but the file browser windows
wouldn't display anything and all I could get was error messages in the
bottom window in moto4lin saying that the search could not be
completed. Eventually I decided to recheck the cable. I picked up the
phone and noticed that the display was black. I opened it up and the
inner display was completely black, like it was turned off. I tried
turning it on, but it was dead.

I was just about to scream curses at moto4lin for killing my phone when
suddenly it came back to life. (Whew!)

Everything seems to be working normally now, but if moto4lin kills your
phone, disconnect it and let it sit for a few minutes.
