Is that a personal preference?  Are you recommending Acers to other people for
some special Linux goodness or general Acer quality?

For someone looking for an inexpensive laptop eBay consistantly has Thinkpads
for ~$500.  

Current versions are T30 about 2Ghz processor, 512MB RAM, 40 to 60GB drive

I presume most of these are coming off corporate leases.  Some even have
original IBM warranty.  

The Thinkpad line is known for quality of build (search the archives
for Keith Loftstorm's dissenting experience) and Linux compatibility.
