[PLUG] Stero line input on a T42

Hi! This is closer to a hardware question than a Linux question, but I
hope you can help me out anyway.

I would like to record line level audio from a stereo amplifier on my
Thinkpad T42. There are only two 1/8" audio jacks on the machine:
headphone and microphone.

The chip is an "Analog Devices AD1981B". The documentation for this chip
states that the allowed input voltage levels for the Mic input are the
same as for the Line input (not accessible on this machine), provided
that the "+20dB Mic Boost" is turned off. But when I try to record
line-level input through the microphone input, the apparent levels are
too high and appear only in one channel, even if the "Stereo Mic" switch
is turned on.

This same signal records just fine through the line input on a desktop
equipped with an emu10k1 card.

Is it possible to record stereo line-level input on my Thinkpad? If so,
how do I do it?

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

-Denis
