Even though I think you already solved your sound problem I will share
what I did to solve my firefox sound problem.

I used ALSA's OSS compatibility layer program aoss. I don't know about
other distributions, but in Gentoo it is in media-libs/alsa-oss. Now
start firefox with aoss. In other words, on the command line or in
your shortcuts replace 'firefox' with 'aoss firefox'.
