GNOME Terminal in newer versions of GNOME opens new terms in the $PWD
of the previous terminal instance rather than ~. I.e. if you're in
/tmp and do Ctrl-Shift-n, you get a new terminal also in /tmp.

Or maybe that's a feature that has been there forever and I only
recently turned it on. Either way, it's handy.
