[PLUG] IBM T21 Laptop and Edubuntu?

I have an old IBM t21 laptop, p3-800mhz and 384 megs
ram. I am trying to install edubuntu onto it to give
to my niece but it seems to run extremely slow(imagine
click, go for coffee, come back, wait... ).

Also, it appears to be running gnome, but I was under
the impression it was supposed to be running KDE?

The last curious thing(and probably related) is... It
boots fine in vga mode, or in standard mode restricted
to 800x600\32. However it doesnt seem to want to boot
if I just boot normally from the cd. Everything
appears fine, gets to where it should be switching on
the graphical interface, and dies. I let it sit
there, thinking it might be the slow system its on,
but it sat for over an hour with nothing but a blank
screen.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

John
