[PLUG] Perl regular expression crashing...

Quantifier follows nothing in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/? <--  
HERE ?????.kornet.net/ at ./block_smtp.pl line 152, <INDAT> line 16249.

What follows is the comparison that crashed:
  $domtotry =~ /$helofrom/

It's the fist time I've seen a log of a spammers rejected email message
where the helo string has a series of question marks in it.  So how can
I deal with this?  Is there a way to change the comparison above so that
Perl knows that $helofrom is not to be interpreted as having any special
characters?
