Do you see more activity in /var/log/messages when you click the sync 
button?  My zire doesn't even appear until the button is hit.  Same 
with the old visor.  I'm actually surprised that you see it as soon as 
you plug it in.  Do they somehow (finally!) support software-activated 
sync from the desktop side?  (Though if that's the case they seem to 
have severely botched it.)

Is udev/hotplug in play?  What is/are it/they doing?

IIRC, jpilot-sync and/or pilot-xfer managed to break itself at some 
point wrt usb pilots specifically because of this plug-in issue.  They 
want to open the port, but the port's not there, so there's some sleep, 
but if you activate the sync via udev the sleep causes the pilot to 
time-out and then the port is gone and you shake your fist and hack the 
C code or something like that.  I think jpilot-sync got this fixed in 
early 2005, but I probably haven't used pilot-xfer since then.

I'm still wondering how to make cdrecord/wodim quit forcing me to spend 
7 seconds carefully considering the consequences of my actions for the 
sake of a $0.05 piece of vinyl.
