Yes, abiword says that it can save a word doc.  But if you look at the
file after you save it,
you see:

 >file test.doc
 test.doc: Rich Text Format data, version 1, ANSI

as opposed to:

 >file word.doc
 word.doc: Microsoft Office Document

The rtf will open in MS word, and is good enough for some cases (for
example, HR departments), but I suspect that it doesn't have all of
the features of word.
