True. But maybe this experience will make me remember that I do have
documentation that explains stuff, and I really should read it.

As far as the time involved, this is the first time I've had in three
years to put into learning about CUPS, and also the first network
connected printer I've had at home. So I should expect to spend a little
time on it. The installation on XP didn't go smoothly, either. There was
no instruction to manually set the printer's IP address before I got
started. Then, after I realized I didn't want it to be known as dhccp4
(or something like that -- what was assigned by my router), I couldn't
find a way to change it in the XP driver. There's a way to change it
from the printer's front panel, which is simple enough, but no way I
could find to change where the computer was told to look for it. In the
troubleshooting section of the web site, the recommendation was to
uninstall the driver and reinstall it! That worked. On the other hand,
the Win98 driver install went very smoothly. Of course, by this time I
had already changed the printer's IP address, and knew to pay attention
to that during the driver install.

As always, now that it works I'm happy.
