I was going to take your suggestion, but decided to wait until after I
finished a big project that I needed the computer for. This evening I
finished it and, just for kicks and giggles, launched the Update
Manager. Guess what? New versions of libgphoto*. I'm pretty sure those
were in the upgrades I did just before this mess started.

I installed the new ones, then shut down and restarted. No more error
messages. I could go sniff around in Ubuntu bug trackers to be sure,
but it looks like someone at Ubuntu put new libgphoto files in the
reppositories before they were ready for prime time, and the ones I
just upgraded to are a hasty fix.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. At least I learned something
more about Linux. Like "don't be in such a hurry to install an
upgrade." :)
