Sorry for the late reply.  It appears that the ati driver is a wrapper 
and selects which driver to use; be it radeon for that family or 
something else for another.  I didn't find this information right off.

And my system runs properly with ati declared in the xorg.conf.  My 
problem must have been the ati driver not properly discerning the laptop 
display vs the external port.  I was getting impatient and trying many 
things in the end.
