I never did find anything that said specifically to "use this driver
name", so I just went with my guess and it works. Here are the lines I
added to /etc/modules.conf on my Slackware 11.0 machine:

# Added 7 May 2007 to try to get the sound mixer settings right at boot
time.
# load/unload the volume settings on startup/shutdown
post-install snd-mixer-oss /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
pre-remove snd-mixer-oss /usr/sbin/alsactl store
