The original issue is that Mysql Monitor won't work with a non-root
user. How about starting with the simplest connection test? Can you
get a mysql shell in an xterm? Can you do it locally? Can you do it
remotely with "-h <host>"? Once that checks out, your problem scope
shrinks to the Mysql Monitor application.
