Because in a line editor, there is *no* newline to delete. The
newline is above you, not on the line to be edited.

that <newline> character at the end of the line......

This is why we argue about it. ;)
It's not an actual debate at this point, so much as cheerful goading,
in hopes that the opposing team will learn from the "home team's"
successes and failures, regardless of which team a person is arguing
for.
